About

Written by Jill Bixby of Maine, and directed by Carol Schoneberg, an End-of-Life educator with Hospice of Southern Maine and founder of the York County Coalition for Dialogue on Dying, B.O.A.T.I.N.G.© addresses the importance of recognizing the point at which aggressive curative treatment might no longer be consistent with the patient’s goals. B.O.A.T.I.N.G. © requires no memorization of lines or seasoned actors. With a performance time of thirty minutes, it lends itself well to an educational environment, with additional time allowed to respond to the feelings and questions it is certain to raise. Using the metaphor of a non-swimmer, B.O.A.T.I.N.G. © explores end-of-life issues more clearly and with greater impact than a didactic presentation could ever hope to do.

Performance

With the goal of reaching as many people as possible, B.O.A.T.I.N.G.© workshops can be brought to your organization or institution. The 2 person team consisting of the author, director and cast member will lead a workshop on the production of B.O.A.T.I.N.G.©, teaching 6 volunteers how to perform the play themselves with the benefit of direction—sharing what has been discovered working together over the past years. The following day the new cast will present 3 staged performances to audiences that have been invited by your facility.

The two team members will meet with prospective participants the day before the scheduled performances for a day of training and practice. The next day the play will be performed at 3 different times to accommodate work schedules for the viewers.

If you are interested in bringing B.O.A.T.I.N.G. ©   to your workplace or facility, please contact Jill Bixby for further information.

Disclaimer

B.O.A.T.I.N.G.© has been performed since 2004. It has come to the attention of the author that the play is being directed and performed by people who have not been trained by the team. Only those people who have been trained personally by the team are able to participate in the performance. The result of untrained cast is misrepresentation of B.O.A.T.I.N.G.© If you are considering bringing B.O.A.T.I.N.G.© to your organization please do check if the crew has been trained by the team.  Having witnessed a diluted performance where the words, characters and staged setting has been altered changes the entire presentation.
